McDermott Energy Solutions (UK), a McDermott affiliate holding the largest stake in the SMDC joint venture, has secured a letter of intent from ExxonMobil Mocambique Limitada covering limited engineering and procurement work for the Rovuma LNG Phase 1 midstream project.

This award supports ongoing planning and definition efforts as the Area 4 partners aim for a final investment decision in 2026. The SMDC consortium brings together McDermott, Saipem, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation.

The onshore Rovuma LNG facility is slated to include 12 modular liquefaction trains with a total output of 18.6 million tonnes per year, with operations targeted to begin in 2031. McDermott will perform engineering for the inside battery limits scope, covering the liquefaction modules, from its London and Gurgaon offices, while also offering project management support to the joint venture team based in Milan.

Michael McKelvy, McDermott’s Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Board, said the Rovuma LNG work leverages the company’s LNG track record in Mozambique and its methodical execution strategy. He pointed to prior experience on Mozambique LNG and a sustained commitment to the country as factors that enable delivery of key infrastructure supporting Mozambique’s rise as a significant global LNG exporter.

Rob Shaul, McDermott’s Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions, said the award underscores a durable partnership with ExxonMobil and the firm’s capability to handle intricate LNG projects. Having already completed front-end engineering design for Rovuma LNG, the company is ready to move the project forward into its subsequent stage, he added.

Rovuma LNG represents ExxonMobil’s biggest single investment and is projected to bring roughly $150 billion in revenue to Mozambique’s government over a 30-year span. A Standard Bank macroeconomic analysis suggests the project could add about $11 billion annually to Mozambique’s GDP and sustain more than 150,000 jobs, underscoring its broad economic significance for the nation.
